Apartments constructed with building defects are in the headlines again

Stuff is reporting further incidences of substandard construction within New Zealand’s apartment complexes and residential developments: http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/76513562/Deregulation-non-compliance-turns-home-into-house-of-horrors.

Although many New Zealanders are familiar with leaky building syndrome, we are increasingly seeing buildings constructed in the last decade which suffer from inadequate structural design, fireproofing and similar issues.  Unfortunately, the costs of repairing these issues is often the same or greater than the costs associated with leaky building syndrome.

As with leaky buildings, property owners often have rights for seeking compensation from the parties responsible for the shoddy construction.  However any proceedings must be filed within 10 years from the date of the negligent act/omission that caused the loss.  Therefore, we encourage any owners of properties approaching 10 years of age to have them checked.
