When did the leaky building crisis begin?
Buildings have always leaked and will always continue to leak however the current epidemic of leaky buildings coincided with the approval of the use of untreated kiln dried timber in the structure of timber frame buildings by the Building Industry Authority in 1998. That is not to say that buildings built earlier than this do not leak or have problems just that the manifestation of the problems are usually delayed by the higher level of timber treatment used before 1998.
