Auckland tops leaky home claims list

Aucklanders make up the majority of leaky home claimants to qualify for Government assistance.

More than 200 homeowners nationwide qualified for the $23 million Leaky Homes Financial Assitance Package, which was launched at the end of July.

Of those, 70 per cent are Aucklanders.

More than 2200 claimants nationwide sought assistance under the package which the Government chipped in $18 million for, with the remaining $5m paid for by local councils.

Under the scheme the Government and councils each pay 25 per cent of the cost of repairs, while homeowners cover the remaining 50 per cent.

"This is a great responce from both existing and new claimants. We're seeing the numbers grow every day and we're hoping to get a lot more so that people can get their leaky homes fixed," said Maurice Williamson, Minister for Building and Construction.

Leaky home owners must lodge a claim within 10 years of the completion of building work to claim from the package.
