Possibly court action for leaky home owners

It's thought a large number of leaky home owners will take court action in order to get 100 percent of their repairs paid for.

Over 200 people have so far qualified for $23 million in assistance under the government and local councils leaky homes scheme.

Another two thousand have expressed their interest in the package which sees homeowners apply for 50 percent of their repair costs.

Lawyer Paul Grimshaw believes a lot of people won't be able to come up with the other half of the bill.

"That's probably why they opt for either going through the tribunal or through the courts to try and recover 100 percent, because if, as an owner, you're entitled to 100 percent, why would you settle for 50 percent," he says.

Mr Grimshaw says his law firm is acting for around six thousand leaky home owners, so the number of people who have received assistance so far, is surprisingly low.
